Home and Commercial Grade Fire Extinguishers
First Alert offers home fire extinguishers and commercial fire extinguishers in several sizes, categories and class types. Having a fire extinguishing product on hand can be the difference between minimal damage and a huge catastrophe. It is recommended to have them on every level of your home, and in common areas like the kitchen, laundry room and garage for full home protection.
Fire Extinguisher Classes and Ratings
Ratings determine the size and type of fire that the extinguisher can be used to put out. The different types of fires include ordinary combustibles, flammable liquids and electrical fires. The three main types of fire extinguisher classes are:
- “A” Class: Primarily wood, paper and fabric
- “B” Class: Primarily flammable liquids (such as gasoline) and oil based
- “C” Class: Electrical in nature
The number preceding the A, B or C rating determines how big of a fire that type of extinguisher can put out. For example, a 10-B:C extinguisher is best to handle a 25-foot square fire and a 5-B:C extinguisher could handle a 12.5 square foot fire.
Using a Fire Extinguisher
The most important thing you should know about using residential or commercial grade fire extinguishers is to only use them on small fires. If you feel able to and do need to use a fire extinguisher, follow the P.A.S.S. technique: Pull, Aim, Squeeze, and Sweep.
